Our beloved mother, Mrs. Chinchih Hsu Sun 孫許金枝 was at home, surrounded by her six daughters holding her hands, when she peacefully joined our father, Mr. Cheng-Chi Sun 孫承基 on May 30th, 2022. Eight years prior, in November 2014, our beloved father (Nov 14, 1925 -- 2014) passed in the same room, surrounded also by their six daughters.
Our mother was born in Taipei, Taiwan, on June 18, 1930. She received a basic education and attended school up to six-grade, which was the practice under Japanese occupation. From an early age she was raised by her adoptive grandma, who loved her dearly. Growing up, she always remained in contact with her birth mother, who was widowed at 32 and had 8 children -- 3 boys and 5 girls. Mom was the seventh of eight, with a younger brother and six elder siblings.
Our mother helped her adoptive grandma watch the family’s corner store from a young age. Once, soon after she was adopted, her birth mother walked past the corner store. Seeing Mom, she quickly hid her face with an umbrella so Mom wouldn't see her and be upset. Mom saw her walk by with her face hidden, and then started to cry and went running after her.
Our father was born in Yangzhou, China, November 14, 1925. He was the oldest of three brothers and one sister. He was especially close to his maternal grandparents who lived nearby. Later he became a top colonel in the Kuomintang CIA fighting the Japanese invasion in China. In 1949 he moved by himself to Taiwan, leaving behind the rest of his family in China. At that point, our mother had lost her adoptive parents and grandmother, and was all alone. Our father met our mother and fell in love. They built a home together, providing every opportunity they could for their six daughters.
Our parents first moved to America in 1987 and split their time between Austin and Taipei. They planned to live near their two oldest daughters then living in Texas: Helen who lived in Circle C, Austin and Paolin who lived in Dallas.
Our parents then relocated from Austin to Rowland Heights, California in early 1993. The youngest daughter Paoyuan moved in with them. At the time, their fourth daughter Sunshine was getting married to Steve in Santa Monica after moving to California from Atlanta.
Their eldest daughter Helen, her husband Tai, and two children, David and Daniel, moved from Texas to Kansas to open a restaurant. Their second oldest daughter Paolin, her husband Mike, and three children, Hans, Wayne, and Alice, moved to Canada to lead a church.
The youngest daughter Paoyuan found work at a Chinese TV station in El Monte. She moved back to Taiwan and in 2001 married Joe, raising three children, Lianne, Luke, and LiChi. Later, the fifth daughter Mandy, her husband Andy, and three children, Nathan, Aaron, and Terasa relocated to Rowland Heights from Kansas to be near them. In our parents' later years, their third daughter Laura moved to Rowland Heights from Kansas to take care of them. Laura has two sons, Andrew and Ray.
Our parents lived in Rowland Heights for thirty years. They raised a big and beautiful family filled with laughing grandchildren and energetic pets, and built a community of fellow immigrants from China and Taiwan. Dad lived in their Southern California home for twenty-two years until he passed at age 90, and Mom spent an additional 8 years in their home until she too passed away peacefully at 92, surrounded by their daughters and grandchildren.
Our loving parents are survived by six daughters, fifteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. They leave behind a legacy of hard work, bravery, and familial love. They built a family that would transcend languages, countries, and oceans. They will be forever cherished and loved by their family. We will always remember them and honor their legacy.
