March 30, 1928September 24, 2012

Helen Dolores “Lola” Alva Aguilar went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 24. She was born in Visalia, California, March 30, 1928, to Cipriana and Margarito Alva. She was the second of four children, and their only daughter. Her brothers include Robert and Margarito who preceded her in death, and Edward who survives her.

Dolores entered into rest while living at Skyline Health Care Center, in San Jose, California. She succumbed to complications due to Parkinson and Alzheimer Diseases.

Her daughter Barbara Susan, son Richard Alonzo, and sister-in-law Estella Alva preceded her in death. Her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Kelly Williams, sisters-in-law Irene Alva, Wanda Alva, and her granddaughters Alexis Orth and Cipriana Hampton survive her as well. She was also great-grandmother to Liliana, Chloe, Jude, Kelly, and Connor, all of whom gave her the greatest joy in her later years. She leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins who now grieve her loss.

Dolores graduated from Visalia Union High School in 1945, where she played clarinet in the band and orchestra. She also attended Pasadena City College. She worked as an NCR operator for Bank of America for over thirty years. She was an active member of Central Church of the Nazarene, where she served on the church board and helped in the nursery. She also volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital after her retirement.

She enjoyed big band music, baseball, musical theatre, and movies. Some of her fondest memories were with her friends from the bank, whether they were carpooling to Orange County from Pasadena, or enjoying lunches, and parties. Her sense of humor, kindness and generosity touched many. She met the challenges of single parenthood, at the same time she helped support her parents. Her level of sacrifice was evident when she donated a kidney to her daughter, Barbara.

Services are on Friday, September 28, at 11 a.m., at the Hillside Chapel at Rose Hills, 3888 Workman Mill Rd., Whittier, CA 90601.

What a lovely woman she was, and a wonderful Aunt to me. She had a great influence in my early life & young adulthood when I lost my dad (her brother Margarito) she had such a loving spirit and always kind words to everyone. I saw her only 2 years ago and how she still remembered me after so many years, holds a special place in my heart. I will always hold a special place for you Tia in my heart! Love,

Lulu (Lupe Alva)
