Chih-Mei Mar passed on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 surrounded by family at home in Rancho Cucamonga, CA after a courageous 5 year battle with cancer. She left us with the utmost peace knowing that she was going to be with the Lord Jesus Christ. Her faith remained strong in spite of all the adversities and suffering she experienced as an example to us all.
Chih-Mei was born in 1942 in Tianjin, China (northern China) and grew up in Taiwan with her parents, Lawrence and Helen and 2 brothers, David and Peter. She attended Taiwan First Girls High School and received her Bachelor of Education from Taiwan Normal University and came to the United States in 1965 to pursue advanced studies. She received a Master of Science from the University of Massachusetts.
She worked at Mt. Sinia Hospital, NY as a dietitian after she graduated from U. Mass. She was introduced to Robert Mar on a blind date and quickly forgot him. The next time they met was at a dance where the boys asked the girls to dance. There was one girl who wasn’t asked to dance and Robert felt bad and asked her to dance. That was when Chih-Mei realized that Robert had a compassionate heart and would make a good partner in life. Robert and May celebrated their love for one another and were married in May 1969. They lived in Poughkeepsie, NY where she continued to be a dietitian at Vassar Hospital. Eventually Robert’s job took them to Colorado where she decided to switch careers into Information Technology. She worked for the State of Colorado and for the County of Boulder, Colorado. She finished her career working for the City of Austin, Texas.
After retirement, she and Robert moved to Rancho Cucamonga, CA to be closer to her parents and her family and Robert’s family. Drawing and painting had never been in her life but became her passion. She started taking drawing lessons and attended several workshops in oil painting and watercolor. She was learning to make the shift to use the right-side of her brain more and see the world the way artists do. She met many wonderful art friends that shared her passion and got advice and guidance in her self-discovery journey into the art world. It was her hope that she could express herself and her feelings through painting with this new state of awareness. There she pursued her love of painting and became an accomplished painter in oils and watercolors. She belonged to an art group called UUGAS (Upper Underground Artists) and she also belonged to the Associated Artists of Inland Empire and Pomona Art Association. Chih-Mei will forever be remembered as a strong, compassionate, beloved wife, loving mother, warm-hearted and generous grandmother, passionate artist and faithful Christian. Chih-Mei Mar leaves behind her husband Robert Mar, and her children Cynthia Mar of Reston, VA and Stephanie Hescock (Steve) of Kirkland, WA to continue sharing her memories. Her grandchildren are Nathan Hescock and Josh Hescock of Kirkland, WA. Her mother, Helen Liu of Alta Loma, CA and remaining brother, Peter Liu (Sarah) of Alta Loma, CA.
A burial ceremony will be held for Mrs. Chih-Mei Mar on August 30 2021 at Rose Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is the wish of the family that any memorials be made to the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org) or OCRA (Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance) (https://ocrahope.org).
