Katherine (Cathy) Ann McLean Schweers was born on December 19, 1955 at Beverly Hospital in Montebello, California. She was one of five children of Barry and Lori (Keane) McLean.
As the eldest of five children, Cathy was her mother’s right-hand, helping to care for her four younger siblings in their Whittier, California home. She quickly became very adept at many household skills, such as cooking, sewing and caregiving. She was a lover of music, and enjoyed listening to artists such as Edgar Winter, Leon Russell and Jethro Tull. She was also a talented artist, skilled at drawing, painting and cartooning. Those who knew Cathy described her as a family-oriented, loving, funny, young woman, who was fiercely protective of those she loved.
Cathy is fondly remembered by her classmates at Pioneer High School (Go Titans) as a sweet, kind and loving young lady. She graduated from “PiHi” in 1974. In fact, she remained in frequent contact with her lifelong friends Carmen and Shelly. Cathy always had an intense curiosity about life and all that it entailed. She often said, “I want to know everything about everything” and so she did her best to do just that. The next year, she married Fred Angelo and traveled with him to military assignment in Heidelberg, Germany, where she made lifelong friends in their local community and had many opportunities to fulfill her dream of learning “everything about everything.”
Shortly after their return home to Whittier from Germany, Cathy realized her other deeply-held dream of becoming a mother when her first child, Nicole Marie, was born on February 3, 1980. Two years later, she welcomed a son, Christopher Michael, on May 21, 1982. Nicole will always attribute her desire for knowledge and curiosity about the world, as well as her own artistic abilities, to her mother, who always encouraged and supported her pursuits, talents and dreams. Christopher always felt no matter how bad a situation was as he continued to grow and figure out life, he had the unconditional love, support and understanding from his mother and that she would never leave his side. That’s how much she loved her children and family. She would tell him to call anytime, day or night.
Cathy has consistently been the source of connection and celebration for the Mclean clan throughout the years. Birthdays, holidays and special events were the center of McLean and Keane family life, and she always made these celebrations extra special for each honoree and guest.
In 1997, under God’s calling, she accepted a new position with her company, Ryder System, Inc., and relocated with her children to Alpharetta, Georgia. While there, she designed and implemented a Call Monitoring Program, coached and trained staff members and co-authored a corporate customer service training module that was utilized company-wide by more than 30,000 employees.
In 2007, Cathy and Steven “met” each other online and proceeded to continue that relationship as Cathy took a new position as a Service Quality Manager at Tropical Shipping in West Palm Beach, Florida. Cathy and Steven met in person in the spring of 2008. They would spend as many weekends together as possible, alternating between Jupiter, Florida and Marietta, Georgia. Then, on a visit to the top of the Jupiter Lighthouse, Steven knelt down (to tie his shoe according to Cathy) and proposed marriage. She accepted and they were married on a wedding cruise in Newport Beach, California in 2012.
They were “the Love of My Life” to each other and were inseparable companions. One of the reasons she loved him is because he laughed at her jokes as she did at his. She always said her favorite place to be was in Steven’s arms. Cathy was in her wheelhouse when family came to visit and stayed for a time. She always made a special effort to make each visitor the center of attention leaving them with a lasting impression.
In December, 2012, Cathy welcomed her first grandchild, Walker, born to her daughter Nicole and her husband Phil, followed by his sister, Antonia, in June, 2014.
Cathy’s wisdom and counsel were often sought out, including from next-door neighbors, the Berry family. Josh and Lisa invited Cathy to become a caregiver for their new baby boy, Adam. In a plan that only God could have put together because everyone was blessed, she spent the last four and half years pouring her motherly knowledge and grandmother wisdom into Adam.
She will be missed by everyone whom she has known. Much like a stone cast into a pond, the rings of her influence will continue to extend across families and time from now into generations to come.
Cathy is survived by her husband, Steven; children Nicole (her husband, Phil) Hensel and Christopher Angelo; her grandchildren, Antonia and Walker Hensel; two sisters, Julie (her husband, Ruben) Avila and Jackie (her husband, Jeff) Bauer; two brothers, Mike (his wife, Rene) McLean and Dave McLean; her stepmother, Doris McLean; nieces and nephews Candice, Jolene (husband Chris), Lauren (her husband, Brian), Steven, Kevin (wife, Larissa), David (wife, Amelia) Melanie (fiancé Brandon; Great nieces and nephews Caprice, Greysen, Carina, Davis, Ilex and Evangeline as well as cousins in the Keane family.
Cathy was preceded in death by her father Barry McLean, her mother Lori Keane Shafter and her step-father Joseph Shafter.
Funeral services will be at SkyRose Chapel at 3 pm, July 13, 2024 with burial to follow at Rose Hills Cemetery, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, California 90601
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 am, July 27, 2024 at Mt. Paran North Church of God, 1700 Allgood Road, Marietta, GA 30062.
