Pageant of Roses Garden

The Pageant of Roses Garden opened in April, 1959 with 240 varieties of roses. Today, it features more than 600 varieties. In 1984, the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) awarded the garden with the coveted Public Rose Garden Achievement Award, designating it the most outstanding rose garden in the nation.

Curator Dr. Tommy Cairns has received Gold Honor Medals from the American Rose Society and the World Federation of Rose Societies. He has also served as president of both organizations and continues to be an active member of the worldwide rose community. In addition, he was awarded the Dean Hold Medal of the Royal National Rose Society of Great Britain and has authored many books about roses.

The 3.5-acre garden is free and open to the public during park hours. Non-commercial photography is permitted free of charge, though prior permission must be obtained for wedding or engagement photography from the Rose Hills marketing department at 562-699-0921.

Rose Hills hosts two annual community events in the garden—a rose pruning demonstration in the winter and a rose care seminar in the summer. Both events are presented by Dr. Cairns. To see a schedule of upcoming community events, click here. To download Pageant of Roses Garden map, click here.

In addition, the Pageant of Roses Garden is the only garden in North America that hosts an international rose trial. Hybridizers submit their entries for new breeds of roses, and those submissions are planted in garden test beds. Two years later, judging is held and an international panel of rose experts choose their favorites. This annual event is closed to the public.
